High-Functioning Depression in High Achievers

Therapeutic support for people who function outwardly — while reaching their inner limits.

When everything runs smoothly on the outside — and nothing is holding you up inside anymore

I am Bianca Stumm. I work with high achievers — executives, founders, self-employed professionals, high-functioning experts — who are successful by conventional standards, and for whom that very success has become a trap.

High-functioning depression is the form of depression that no one sees: performance on the outside, emptiness on the inside. Burnout is the physical and emotional state of exhaustion that often accompanies it — and masks it.

The most dangerous defense is: "I can't be depressed — I'm still functioning." But functioning and truly thriving are not the same. You can be competent in your profession and still suffer. You can meet all your obligations and still feel empty inside. The fact that you keep everything running does not mean you are doing well — it means you have become very good at showing something else.

Do you recognize yourself?

  • You function — meetings, deadlines, responsibilities — while feeling exhausted inside
  • Sleep no longer brings recovery
  • Success feels empty rather than nourishing — you tick things off and keep waiting to feel something
  • You can't remember the last time you felt genuine joy
  • Breaks trigger guilt instead of restoration
  • You cry in the car, in the shower, during exercise — briefly, controlled, without anyone noticing
  • You are the competent person everyone turns to — and no one asks how you are really doing
  • You feel like you're playing a role that has long since become your identity
  • Your environment would be shocked if they knew how you really feel
  • The discipline that has always saved you is no longer enough

High-functioning depression is particularly dangerous because it remains invisible — even to those affected. People maintain their performance for years. Until an event intervenes — a loss, an illness, a change — and the system suddenly collapses. You don't have to wait until it no longer works.

Therapeutic support for high-functioning depression and burnout

I am a certified Rapid Transformational Therapy (RTT) practitioner and hypnotherapist, trained by Marisa Peer, as well as a graduate of Dr. Gabor Maté’s “Healing Trauma and Addiction for Professionals”. Before my therapeutic work, I spent over twenty years advising international companies as an enterprise consultant for SAP, Oracle and Microsoft Dynamics in supply chain and logistics.

This background is not an add-on, but the reason I now work with high achievers. I understand the language, the structures and the logic of this world from the inside — and I understand why discipline, analysis and self-hardness are precisely the tools that lead to high-functioning depression.

Focus Areas of My Work

High-Functioning Depression

When everything runs smoothly on the outside — career, relationships, performance — while emptiness, exhaustion and loss of meaning dominate inside. Complementary to medical treatment, with a focus on the patterns and beliefs running in the background.

Burnout Support

Chronic exhaustion, sleep disorders, emotional distance from work. Working on the nervous system and the beliefs that determine your own pace — before and during recovery.

Self-Worth and Identity

When your own value is tied to performance and breaks feel like failure. Life transitions, professional reorientation, the question: who am I when I am not producing?

Important Note on Diagnosis and Treatment:

High-functioning depression describes a form of depressive symptoms in which those affected remain functional in daily life. A medical diagnosis of depression can only be made by a doctor or a licensed psychotherapist. My work is not psychotherapy and not medical treatment — it complements these when present and does not replace them.

Burnout is classified by the World Health Organization (ICD-11, QD85) not as a standalone disease, but as a work-related phenomenon of exhaustion. Here I offer coaching and therapeutic support.

In cases of acute psychiatric crises, severe depressive episodes, suicidality or untreated severe substance use disorders, I refer to colleagues with the appropriate clinical training.

My Approach

Most clients need one to three RTT sessions, supplemented by accompanying coaching. Initial and follow-up consultations take place via video conference. In-person sessions are possible in selected settings upon request.

Languages: German, English, Romanian.
